Organised by Cancer Support France – Languedoc

For the second year running, we’re adopting a flexible format for our ever-popular annual fundraising event, Walk for Life. This helps  to protect participants from unanticipated COVID-related restrictions.

In 2018, CSF-L’s 8th Walk for Life saw over 200 participants walk a combined total of more than 1500km and raise a fantastic sum of €5000.  Sadly, our 2019 walk had to be cancelled because of bad weather, but last year we introduced a new ‘COVID-proof’ format Walks for Life and were overwhelmed by the way you embraced the challenge. Against all the odds, over 200 walkers (and cyclists) from far and wide raised over €8000!

Adopting last year’s successful reinvention, WALKS for Life 2021 proposes that small groups of friends and families organise individual walks or cycle rides of their choice – which can be known and loved, or new and unexplored – of any length and on any day in September. This new format allows for anyone to take part, wherever they are.

Why not walk or ride on September 26th and join us for a BYO picnic at Lac du Salagou afterwards?

Just to mix it up a bit this year, we are also proposing an option that allows more of us to get together after our walks/rides, but in a way that gives full flexibility in the event of plans needing to change at the last minute should any new restrictions come into force.

Plan your walk or ride near Lac du Salagou on 26th September and join us for a BYO picnic at the lakeside (more details about the exact location to follow). Weather permitting, we’ll be there from 12 until around 3pm so, depending on the length and time of your walk, we’d love to see you either after, before (or even half way through) your exertions!

Where will the money go?

The Covid-19 pandemic has seen funding needs exploding on all fronts, and has led to a collapse in donations to La Ligue Contre le cancer not seen since World War II.  The research projects initiated and funded by La Ligue bring about significant advances in the treatment and quality of life of people with cancer throughout France. To support the work of this important Association, we propose to donate 50% of all funds raised during this year’s WALKS FOR LIFE to La Ligue Contre le cancer Comité de l’HÉRAULT.  Please give generously!

Although, once again, we can’t Walk for Life together as usual this year, we hope that as many of you as possible will don your walking boots/cycle shorts one day in September, wherever you may be, in honour of those close to you who have been affected by cancer.

How Walks for Life 2021 works

  • Get together with your family, friends, walking/cycling club and organise a group to participate in Walks for Life 2021.
  • Groups can be as large or small as you like (restrictions allowing). If groups aren’t your thing, you can even walk alone …. or with your dog!
  • Consider walking or cycling ‘remotely’ with other friends who can’t be with you, using Zoom, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc.
  • Your route can be as long or short as you fancy, and wherever you like.
  • Group leaders will be responsible for registering with us, telling us who is in the group and collecting donations.
  • Plan your walk or ride for any day in September.
  • Take a picnic and a big bottle of water
  • Collect donations from your fellow walkers/cyclists on the day, or ask them to donate directly to Cancer Support France – Languedoc (see below for more details on how to pay).  We suggest a minimum of €10 for participants over 14 years old.
  • Take some photos along your route and send them to us for a chance to win a beautiful hand-made quilt.

If you are in the Herault and would like to meet up with other walkers/cyclists for a BYO picnic, plan your Walks for Life event for 26th September near Lac du Salagou (more details to follow).

I’m up for it – how do I register?

It couldn’t be easier.  Registration is open now, so group leaders can just click on the link below and fill in the very short form.  Not everyone in your group needs to sign up – just the person organising.

When you register you will be asked to check a box to confirm you have read and accept the declaration on behalf of yourself and the other people in your group. Declaration: I confirm that we wish to enter Walks for Life 2021 which is organised by and is in aid of CSF-Languedoc and La Ligue Contre le cancer l’Herault. We understand that we do so at our own risk and that CSF-Languedoc is not responsible for any injury or loss that may occur as a result of our participation. We confirm that we have taken medical advice from a general practitioner prior to the event about any conditions that might affect our physical ability to participate. We consent that photographs taken during Walks for Life 2021 may be used to publicise these events and the work of the association. I understand that by registering I/we commit to giving CSF-Languedoc a minimum donation of 10 Euros per person over age 14 in my group.

How do I donate?

Once Group leaders have registered their group, they will receive a check-in form for all participants to sign on the day of their event. On the form, participants can indicate whether their donation has been given to their group leader or whether they are sending it directly to CSF-Languedoc.

Please make your donation in cash or by cheque payable to CSF-Languedoc via your group leader (indicating the amount against your name on the check-in form), or by one of the methods given in the section “If you wish to make a donation” below.

After the event, Group leaders should send the check-in form to the Treasurer by email at treasurer.csflanguedoc@gmail.com, or by post (see below), so we know who has already made their donation, and who we are still expecting to receive donations from.
