Summary of announcement of new law concerning additional financial support for women with breast cancer

The French National Assembly has ratified a law designed to improve financial coverage for women suffering from breast cancer. The details are as follows:-

Breast cancer is the most frequent form of cancer among women and often the most dangerous. Paying for many non-reimbursed treatments and post-operative care leave many women in a financially precarious situation.

The purpose of the new law is to reduce the high level out-of-pocket expenses currently experienced by those who are the most disadvantaged breast cancer patients in France, who are often either partially reimbursed or not reimbursed at all. Under the new law, financial support for breast cancer patients will be provided in the post-operative phase of recovery in the areas of breast protheses, medical tattooing and the provision of adapted bras. It is estimated that costs of up to 1,400 euros will be budgeted for around 700,000 patients who otherwise often forgo treatment because of the expense.

A budget will also be provided for other post-op services which are not currently reimbursed such as anti-dryness treatments, medical cosmetics, psychological and nutritional support and physical activity for patients undergoing treatment.

In addition, ceilings on fees for reconstructive surgery are being negotiated with the medical profession and health insurance agencies as it is estimated that up to 15% of patients cannot afford this type of surgery.
